Dinner and a Movie

For my Dinner and a Movie project, I chose to go with the movie Spirited Away created by Studio Ghibli. The reason for this is because Studio Ghibli movies have always been a huge inspiration in my artworks and I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to showcase that. The flowers represent one of the most iconic moments the main characters are running through a flower patch to be alone for a moment. The plate is meant to represent the main character, Chihiro and the bacon represents her parents and Chihiro wanting to rescue them. The water in the cup represents the other main character, Haku. Towards the end of the movie when Chihiro and Haku are falling from the sky, hence the placemat, he remembers that he is the water spirit after forgetting his identity for a long time.  The rice in the bowl along with the "gold" represents greed and how No Face, one of the spirits in the movie, gives away fake gold to the employees in the business they are in. And finally, the candle represents the light that Chihiro gives off.  Throughout the movie, Chihiro is a gloomy girl but towards the end, she gives people around her hope and she makes them smile.
